This summer I knew I wanted to the boys to do something each week that involved something other than Minecraft. That’s why I was excited to find out Best Buy was sending them the VEX Robotics-Robotic Arm to test out. My boys never really got into building blocks when they were younger but they love anything that has to do with technology and robotics, so I knew this would be a big hit.
VEX Robotics-Robotic Arm:
Jordan and John are twelve and thirteen, and they were able to assemble the robotic arm entirely on their own. Unfortunately, before they could complete it their sister Anna lost one piece, and they never got it completed. We are going to see if we can mold that one part and make it work if so we also plan to buy the motor. If we can’t do that, I guess we will be purchasing a new unit so we can finally enjoy the rewards of all of our hard work (or I should say Jordan’s hard work since he put most of it together).
Overall this project took the boys about three days to complete from start to finish, but I think they could have probably completed it in one afternoon if they wouldn’t have had to attend summer bridge for three days.
Jordan says the best part of building the VEX Robotics-Robotic Arm is the challenge. There were times when I thought he was going to smash it against the table because he just couldn’t get the parts to fit together. I kept telling him that he had to follow each step exactly and that he needed to start from the beginning and recheck his work. Once he figured out his mistake he was able to get the pieces together, and I know what a rewarding feeling that is. It’s a lot like coding. You know the error is right in front of you, but you just can’t seem to see it, you have to walk through each step until you figure it out, and once you do you feel like throwing a dance party at your desk.
Yeah, I could tell that’s totally how he felt! 😉

About VEX Robotics-Robotic Arm:
Have you ever wondered how industrial robots work? You know, the kind of robots that work on assembly lines building other complex pieces of machinery? Now you can unlock the mystery behind these sophisticated robots by building one of your own! Exclusively from HEXBUG® comes the VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm – a completely functional construction kit inspired by real industrial robot arms.
This unique Robotic Arm is hand powered and can pick up and relocate items using four degrees of freedom and an articulated grabber hand. The whole crane can rotate 360 degrees, allowing this miniature robot to perform the complex actions of its real life counterpart.
Kids and robotics enthusiasts alike will have fun building this STEM-based kit that pays special attention to important scientific principals including gear reductions and power transfer through the robotic arm’s intricate gearing techniques.
HEXBUG® hopes to inspire future generations of engineers and designers by allowing them to explore this exciting field through the fun of hands-on creative play
