Online tutoring for kids is not something I imagined myself needing with two middle school AIG students. My boys have always done very well in school and with the added “gifted” status I assumed their years of schooling would fly by, make an incredible resume builder, and require very little of me. Sure, I would need to make sure they didn’t get lazy and help them (via the internet) when they couldn’t remember how to solve a math problem that I had long forgotten, but other than that I knew they would be just fine.
Then middle school happened. I was in for a shock during when my oldest son started middle school. I had no clue that he would struggle the way he did, and I wasn’t prepared to see my straight A student start failing classes. What was happening? I talked to other moms who were going through the same thing. Their previously successful children were failing miserably. I wasn’t sure what had changed from their easy breezy elementary years to their rocky middle school F-bombs (I mean F’s, people big fat F’s), but something wasn’t right.
Now with two children in middle school, I have found that the leap from one school to the next is incredibly taxing on even the brightest students. It’s not unusual to see children go from A’s to F’s with a change in schools. Rumour has it that the 5th-grade teachers spend a majority of the year telling said, 5th graders, that nothing will be as easy in middle school as it was in elementary school. Of course, this brings up an entirely different set of issues. Why aren’t the better preparing these children for middle school? If they know the changes are going to be so dramatic why not use 5th grade to prepare them for what lies ahead, but that’s a post for another day.
Over the past few months, my 6th grader has managed to get in the groove and his grades are coming back up, but the 7th grader can’t seem to keep his head above water. Not knowing what else I could do I decided to spend time researching online tutoring for kids. I figured if I could combine things he loves (like texting and technology) with what he seems to hate right now (school) maybe we could make some progress. From what I can tell my son is bored in class, which is understandable, but he needs to be able to ask the questions he has, and he really needs some one on one time with his teacher. Sadly teachers just don’t have time to engage each child every day. I understand that they are overworked and that they have to teach on the lowest level for each class, but my son needed help.
Online Tutoring For Kids: Homework Help
Recently my son tried Mentored for the first time. We started a mentor that could help him prep for an upcoming science test. I was so pleased with his response to online tutoring. At first, he didn’t know what to ask, and he was a little shy but by the end of his session he was talking up a storm and asking questions that had more to do with his curiosity than the questions that would be on the test.
Eureka! That has been my goal all along. I want my children to love learning and to remember why education is so much fun. I’m not a big fan of the public school system, not because I think it’s bad, but because my desire is individual learning for my children, not a curriculum based on what the government thinks my kids need to know. I think school, peer pressure, and tests make children forget what they learned in Kindergarten, which is that learning is a lifelong process that is unlike anything else in this world. Knowledge is power and learning is an adventure. Since I can’t homeschool, I try to make the best of the situation, and I try to provide experiences at home that make up for what is lost in the common core curriculum, but I can only do so much.
Mentored is the safe, easy and affordable way to connect with experts for help in math, science, literature, and more! You can use the app or website for students in grades 7-12 and college to access low cost and high quality 1:1 homework help from their community of trusted experts. During a Session with a Mentor your child can get homework help, prepare for upcoming exams, or get ahead in school. Mentored cuts out all of the wasted time typically associated with tutoring, students can easily request help and are instantly connected with someone who can help them master the concepts.
A Session with a Mentor lasts up to 20 minutes, and costs only $5 per session and they can extend the session if they need to (which is what my son usually does). During the Session Mentors will guide your child through the material, helping them to understand and master difficult concepts.
Thankfully the passionate educators on Mentored help me fill the gaps. My son did very well on his science test, in case you were wondering and he loves using this online tutoring tool. My next goal is to get him prepared for the SAT’s because he’s scheduled to test later in the year.
If you can relate and are looking for a solution to plummeting grades, Mentored may be exactly what you need to boost your child’s morale and GPA! You can get a 20 minute session for FREE when you use the link above!
