Today’s story comes from Thea Butler of Stourbridge UK. She was 25 when she learned that she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation.
Describe your BRCA journey in one sentence: An life-changing journey, one that I wouldn’t change for the world!
What made you decide to get tested for the BRCA gene mutation?
I lost my mom to Breast Cancer when I was 9 months old, my maternal grandmother also passed away from breast cancer. I found out about the BRCA gene while on holiday in Tenerife in 2012, as soon as I got back I went to see my doctor who referred me to the genetics clinic.
Are you BRCA1 or BRCA2 positive? BRCA1
What did you think/feel when you discovered you were BRCA positive? How did it affect those around you?
At first I thought why me, but once I’d got my head around it all I felt alright about it.
What surgical procedures (if any) have you undergone?
In March I had a prophylactic double mastectomy. I will have a full hysterectomy when I’m 35.
How has your BRCA gene mutation changed your life?
It’s really brought me out of my shell! I’m more confident now than I’ve ever been. I appreciate the little things in life more.
If you could share any tips of advice with women who have just learned they have the BRCA gene mutation what would it be?
To see things in a positive light. Having this knowledge gives us a choice to make that many didn’t get a chance to have. Don’t rush into anything, take it in and take time to decide on what’s right for you.
