Living Room Makeover Before & After

2015 has been the year of home makeovers for our family. As a military family, we’ve never put a ton of thought into decorating and remodeling our house. Don’t get me wrong, my husband has always encouraged me to make any house our home, but I’ve always felt like it was a waste of time, until now. In the past, I would focus on the kids’ bedrooms and my office, but other than that we moved the same décor to every house and I never updated anything.

I’m not sure if it’s my age, or the fact that my style has changed so much over the last 15 years. Earlier this year I was bitten by the home decorating bug, and I have been busy ever since. In January, we started painting the bedrooms upstairs and by April we were working in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. Those jobs were pretty extensive, not to mention expensive, so we decided to take a much-needed break.

This month I told my husband that it’s time to get back to it. We are nowhere near finished, and the room that has been bothering me the most lately is the living room. After all, the living room is one of the most important rooms in our home. This is the room that hosts friends, movie nights, and “no babysitter” date nights. Frankly I’m tired of looking at the old boring décor. The wall colors were chosen by John, and he did an excellent job painting them, but gray on gray makes me depressed. I’m not even kidding. During the winter, I hate being downstairs (which is where I work) because it feels as gloomy inside as it is outside. NOT COOL!

While I didn’t want to force John to repaint, I knew I had to do something to add some color to our 50 shades of lame, living room. Over the past year, I have been shopping at Big Lots for my home décor, so I decided to start there. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, so I was hoping to be inspired once I got to the store. On my first trip, I went with my friend Jen. We looked around the store, and I saw a few things I REALLY liked. Then I went back home to brainstorm and consider all of my options. After I had a better idea of what kind of look I was going for I headed back to Big Lots with John. He is always helpful when it comes to answering my decorating questions because he pays more attention to details I usually miss. Like “Will this actually fit in the space I want to put it in?” Or “Do these colors work well together?” He may be a man, but he has an eye for décor and is great at coming up with out of the box ideas I may not consider. For instance, when I told him I wanted to add some candles to the mantle but knew they would block the DVD player and cable box. Guess what he did? He built me a box to put under the TV that will hold our components. Yes, ladies, I am one lucky woman!

Living Room Before Makeover

When it came to choosing what I wanted to do with the room, I knew I needed large wall hangings for both sides of the TV. My mom gave me some metal décor she was getting rid of, but they just didn’t work. I also wanted to find Sophie another home because the kennel in the living room was a total eyesore. I knew I would need to find something to replace it, but I wasn’t sure what. Oh, and as much as I love having family pictures hanging in our home, my frames were almost as old as the photos, so I knew I wanted to toss that too.

What I didn’t expect to replace anytime soon was the coffee table. We found the old coffee table super cheap a few months ago, and it was better than nothing, so I settled. To say I was thrilled when my husband asked if I wanted this new one would be a significant understatement. That, my friends, is why I love taking my husband shopping with me! 😉 John loves Big Lots furniture as much as I do, because when we shop Big Lots, his hand relaxes its grip on his wallet! That sectional you see, yeah he bought it at Big Lots!

Note: Styles and assortments vary by store.

Do you remember when Big Lots only had a few small pieces of furniture? Maybe a bookcase here and there or an office chair? Take a look at the selection they offer now. Pretty awesome, am I right? Oh, and don’t worry if you’re shopping alone, the people in the furniture department are excellent. Larry (our fabulous furniture guy) got everything together and put it up front for us. Then he waited so he could help us get it into the car (in the rain). Now that’s service!

I love my new coffee table because it’s both stylish and practical. Now I have a place to store all of the blankets we keep downstairs, the remotes, and the kid’s tech gadgets! I am one happy organizing mama!

I think if I had to choose a favorite piece it would have to be the wall art. I LOVE the furniture, but the wall art adds texture to the room that makes it feel multidimensional. Before this makeover, I would have described the living room as feeling “flat”. It had absolutely no life.

Living Room After Makeover

Now it’s bold, colorful, and maybe it’s the red, or the fact that my husband helped me so much, but it feels more romantic as well!

After putting the TV on the DIY component box, my husband made, I am thinking about shopping at Big Lots one more time for something to fill those spaces. Maybe something to go up against the wall, or bigger candle holders. I’m not sure yet, but I know I’ll figure it out when I see it! Thankfully they sell home décor and furniture at a value we can’t pass up. Otherwise, I would have probably only purchased two wall hangings and called it a day! If you’re looking for inspiration stop by the Big Lots Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest channels for ideas!

If you could give your living room a makeover what would you change? What piece of furniture would you purchase to change the style of your room?
