After raising our children and dealing living as empty nesters, I never imagined we would be building a fort bed for toddlers. It’s funny how life works. When our children were growing up we didn’t have the money to create fun beds for toddlers because we worked all the time and were always strapped for cash. By the time our kids were grown we could finally afford to do fun things, but had no one to do them for. Now I understand why grandchildren are such a gift! We built these beds for our grandchildren and they LOVED them!
Fort Bed For Toddlers:
These are the two side-by-side closets upstairs that we used to for our toddler fort beds. This was one of the most enjoyable re-modeling projects we have done so far.
How We Made A Fort Bed For Toddlers:
Step 1: We started by removing everything from the closet and painting the walls. This was the boring part because we had to spackle and sand everything to repair all dents, etc. While it might be tempting, if you skip this part you will have wasted your time.
Step 2: We put in a new floor and removed the closet doors. We saved the doors just in case we ever needed them again.
We used peel and stick vinyl tile that looks and feels like hardwood. They came in 4 inches wide by 3 foot long lengths that you stagger when you lay them. They look amazing, and most people would not be able to tell the difference (especially the toddlers).
Step 3: Hallie framed out the toddler bed and two drawer dressers in each room.
Step 4: We then put in the Batman and Superman Murals and borders. Then he finished the bed and dresser. He raised sides of the bed about 8 inches to help keep our little fellows from falling out. Each bed is built like a hollow box so both contain storage for everything we normally keep in the closet and they are easy to access via a hinged door.
Step 5: We purchased a couple of crib mattresses for the rooms, and we were able to find bedding, a shelf and a figurine for each room.
I purchased the matching cloth from the craft store and sewed curtains to close each room. (The curtains were the reason I wanted to call the rooms sleeping forts.)
Step 6: We hung the curtain rod and curtains in each room. At this point the rooms were ready for sleeping, all except for one thing. I really wanted to put in a string phone; you know the cans that have a string running between them for talking and listening to each other; but we decided not to put the holes in the walls. When the boys came to visit, they were able to sleep in their forts with their battery operated lanterns. It was fun for us and them.
Once our oldest grandson outgrew his toddler fort bed we needed to have a new room for our granddaughter. In just one afternoon we were able to do a girlie makeover. We transformed the room from a Superman Room into a Princess Room. A little paint, some decals, new border and a new toddler bed set transformed our closet into a beautiful princess castle!
Are you considering making a fort bed for toddlers? It’s really not that hard. It may take some time, but it is totally worth it! Who knew sleeping in the closet could be so much fun? 😉
