My kids love pizza just like every other kid on the planet but lately I’ve noticed that their tastes are changing. At least once a month we order pizza for the kids and the last three times we have ordered pizza they have complained that it doesn’t taste good. Three different pizza places and the same complaining that the pizza isn’t as good as it used to be.
I decided to stop wasting money on pizza the kids don’t like anymore and asked them if they would like to make their own. They were thrilled to get another chance to spend time in the kitchen, and I was hopeful we could find a sauce that would meet their ever-changing taste buds. I decided to go a little more gourmet than your typical pizza sauce.
Easy Gourmet Pizza Recipe:
When I went shopping for the sauce I wasn’t sure what I was looking for; I just knew I wanted something a little sweet and as the kids would say “fancy.” That’s when Bertolli® Riserva sauces caught my eye. Compared to everything else on the shelves they looked “fancy” but when I spotted a sauce with truffle oil, I was sold!
Note: The pictures in this post are from our second experience with Bertolli® Riserva sauces, which is why the Balsamic Vinegar & Caramelized Onions sauce is in the pictures, but I’m still going to share my truffle oil story.
My husband and I were given a gift certificate a few years ago to a little restaurant in Southern Pines, and I had a terrible migraine the night we went. It was supposed to be a beautiful date night, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I usually can’t eat much when I have a migraine but we were already there so I ordered anyway. The only thing on the ridiculously expensive menu that looked like something I would be able to keep down was macaroni and cheese, but it wasn’t just any old mac and cheese, no it was infused with truffle oil. I admit that at that point I had no clue what truffle oil was and I fully expected this mac and cheese to have chocolate in it. Of course it didn’t come with chocolate but it was and still is the most delicious macaroni and cheese I have ever eaten. That dish was the highlight of my night, migraine and all.
Needless to say I may have forgotten that I was buying this sauce so my kids could make their own pizza, but in the end everyone was happy. The kids all agreed that their homemade pizza was better than any carry-out and they asked me to buy more sauce only this time they wanted to try something different. I allowed them to choose the sauce for the pizzas we are sharing today, and they chose the Bertolli® Riserva Balsamic Vinegar & Caramelized Onions. If you get the chance be sure to try the Bertolli® Porcini Mushrooms & White Truffle Oil as well!
These pizzas are so easy to make a child can do it, no really, my 7-year-old made the pizzas you see here! All she did was take pre-made pizza crusts, one jar of Bertolli® Riserva Balsamic Vinegar & Caramelized Onions (1 cup of sauce per crust), lots of mozzarella, and some pepperoni, and baked them according to the pizza crust directions. Doesn’t get much easier than that does it?
After making a few pizzas the kids let me know that they would like to try their hands at some flat bread pizzas next time. What is happening to these children? I feel like I don’t even know them anymore. Just kidding, they are exactly like their dad! He is such a picky eater and only likes the finest of everything so it really doesn’t surprise me.
I was excited to learn that our pizza creations not only help feed my hungry kids but other hungry children as well. During the month of October, Bertolli® will make a $1 donation to help end childhood hunger in America through a partnership with No Kid Hungry when you use the hashtag #MyTuscanTable. With each dollar, No Kid Hungry will provide 10 healthy meals to kids in need, that’s up to a half a million meals. No Kid Hungry is ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring kids have the healthy food they need, every day. The Bertolli® brand is proud to lend its passion for uniting people over food to help connect kids struggling with hunger to the nutritious meals they need to grow and thrive. How awesome is that? We will be sharing our picture tomorrow and I hope you will share yours as well!
